MINNEAPOLIS -- The Kansas City Royals will try and right the ship on Monday when they open a three-game series against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field on Labor Day.The Royals scored four runs in the seventh inning against the Detroit Tigers on Sunday to take a brief lead before Joakim Soria allowed two runs in the next half inning. Kansas City was unable to match and lost 6-5, dropping the rubber match of a three-game series. The Royals have now lost four of their last five games since a 13-2 stretch vaulted the defending world champions back into postseason contention. Instead of a defining moment, the Royals went 2-4 in a six-game homestand against two teams that are, like them, vying for wild-card positioning. We could easily have gone 6-0 on this homestand, Royals manager Ned Yost told the Kansas City Star. Just four really tough losses and (we) had a chance to win all of them.Kansas City will begin the series four games behind the Baltimore Orioles for the second wild-card spot in the American League and 9 1/2 games back of the Cleveland Indians for first in the Central.Minnesota had a chance to begin their 10-game homestand with a series win against the Chicago White Sox on Sunday but were unable to hold a late lead in a 13-11 loss in 12 innings. The Twins began the four-game series riding a 13-game losing streak but snapped out of it in a win on Thursday. After hitting four home runs in a win on Saturday night, Minnesota clobbered four more on Sunday, including Byron Buxtons first career grand slam. But the Twins bugaboo all season, their shaky pitching staff, reared its head again late, allowing Chicago to score three runs over the final two innings, sending the game to extras.Thats a tough one, said Twins manager Paul Molitor. You score 11 runs and have a lot of guys with good days with the bat. And it wasnt enough.Ian Kennedy will get the start for Kansas City on Monday. Kennedy pitched eight shutout innings against the Twins at Kauffman Stadium on Aug. 20 and is looking for his third win over Minnesota in four tries. The Twins will counter with Jose Berrios, who has struggled mightily in nine starts in the big leagues. The rookie right-hander has allowed a total of 18 runs over his last four starts with Minnesota and was optioned to Rochester following his last outing on Aug. 25 against Detroit, when he gave up five earned runs on six hits and five walks in five innings of work.Berrios allowed three runs on five hits and struck out 14, however, in his last start with Rochester on Wednesday.Darryl Sittler Jersey . 4 Villanova with a 96-68 drubbing on Monday. But receiver Justin Hardy pulled in the ball for a go-ahead TD, and the sideline dynamic changed.Ryan had thrown an end-zone interception in the third quarter. Another red-zone meltdown couldve been devastating. In Mondays team meeting, Quinn credited the difference in playing with awareness, a high motor and for each other. As a player thats one of the things you totally control -- how hard ?you go at it, how hard youre willing to bring it for your guys, Quinn said. Can you show that kind of toughness and determination? I was really pleased with the toughness of the guys.Hardys 8-yard catch was one example. Safety Kemal Ishmael made a fourth-down tackle in the middle of the final period to set up Atlantas last touchdown. Tight ends Jacob Tamme, Austin Hooper and Levine Toilolo combined for 10 catches, 180 yards and a touchdown.Running backs Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman combined for 139 yards rushing and a TD on 29 carries. Ryan passed for 396 yards and two additional touchdowns and ran for a 2-point conversion. All-Pro receiver Julio Jones caught five passes for 106 yards and a TD.There are plenty of areas to clean up. Quinn said the defense missed 10 tackles, four on Oaklands final scoring drive. A penalty for having 12 men on the field negated a punt and extended a possession that led to a Raiders score.ddddddddddddornerback Robert Alford intercepted a pass in the end zone, but the play was negated because he pushed off the receiver. The defense allowed four runs of at least 14 yards and hit quarterback Derek Carr only three times. Its an area Im not pleased with, Quinn said of the pass rush. That part of our game has to come through. Nine times we got the quarterback off his spot yesterday. Were a work in progress there for sure.Quinn was impressed, however, with how many offensive players were involved in plays on the ball. Ryan completed passes to nine different receivers. Receivers delivered on game-plan assignments to block linebackers and safeties and extend runs.We had some runs in yesterday that we hadnt shown prior, Quinn said. It was a good look (against the Raiders). The Falcons (1-1) visit New Orleans (0-2) next Monday.Game notesJones had an MRI on his right calf but is expected to be full speed for the Saints game. Jones was hurt when two defenders fell on him after a 20-yard catch in the fourth quarter. He did not play on Atlantas final possession. ... Rookie LB DeVondra Campbell (ankle) did not make the trip after getting hurt in practice last Friday. Quinn said its too early to give a timetable on his return. Sean Weatherspoon started in Campbells spot. ... Rookie SS Keanu Neal (knee) will be limited when the team returns to practice Thursday.
