INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Colts are in trouble with three games left to play.Theyre one game out of the AFC South lead, down the head-to-head tiebreaker to Houston inside the division and additional tiebreakers in the race for a wild-card spot.Their battered roster took even more hits during Sundays demoralizing loss to the Texans and now the Colts must spend the next two weekends on the road -- at Minnesota and at Oakland -- after putting themselves on the brink of playoff elimination.Outside the team complex everyone understands that Indy is likely to miss the postseason party for the second straight year. Inside the building, nobody is making a concession speech. Were not out of this thing, but we have to do our part. Everybody knows what we have to do, linebacker Trent Cole said.Being in this league 12 seasons, Ive seen a lot of different things, a lot of different scenarios. But we have to do our part.As usual, coach Chuck Pagano is fighting back with some reminders of the bouts hes already survived. He missed 12 games during the 2012 season, his first in Indy, to battle leukemia and then coached his first playoff game without offensive coordinator Bruce Arians, who was hospitalized on game day.The next year in the playoffs against Kansas City, Pagano watched everyone count out the Colts when they trailed 38-10 less than 90 seconds into the second half. Andrew Luck wound up leading Indy to an improbable 45-44 victory.Last year, after losing Luck for nine games and playing five different quarterbacks, Pagano still managed to go 8-8 by winning the season finale with recently signed street free agents Josh Freeman and Ryan Lindley taking turns behind center in the season finale. And after reports surfaced of a rift between Pagano and general manager Ryan Grigson and rampant speculation about Paganos impending firing, both not only survived but also received contract extensions through the 2019 season in January. So defying conventional wisdom has become the norm for Pagano and he believes his team can do it again. You guys all know I have great perspective on things and I always keep that perspective with me, Pagano said.As much as it (the loss) stings, its ancient history as far coaches and players go.A handful of players relayed similar messages to reporters Monday. But to prove the doubters wrong, Indy (6-7) must do something it hasnt all season -- win three straight -- and still get some help.Even the players couldnt sugarcoat their frustration. We laid down -- its simple, receiver T.Y. Hilton said Sunday. Guys didnt make plays that were supposed to make plays.Pagano and cornerback Darius Butler said they believed Hiltons comment was made in the emotion of the moment and wasnt intended to be critical of teammates or coaches.Digging out of this hole becomes even more challenging now that left guard Jack Mewhort (left knee) and starting safety Clayton Geathers will miss the rest of the season. Both were placed on injured reserve Monday. And after failing to meet expectations with Luck healthy this season, Pagano and the Colts will likely be dealing with more speculation about the futures of Pagano, Grigson or both and whatever offseason changes could be coming. The Colts solution is simple: Focus on football, hope for the best and ignore the rest.We have these last few games and we have no idea whats going to happen, linebacker Edwin Jackson said. But we have to go out and win these last three games and see what happens. We took a big hit yesterday.Game notesIndy also put backup linebacker Curt Maggitt (knee) on injured reserve and filled two spots on the roster by signing veteran safety Duke Williams and promoting receiver Devin Street from the practice squad to the active roster. ... Receiver Donte Moncrief (hamstring) is listed as day to day. ... Pagano said outside linebacker Robert Mathis (biceps) is getting healthier, but that right guard Denzelle Good has not yet been cleared from the concussion protocol.---For more NFL coverage: http://www.pro32.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/AP-NFLVictor Hedman Lightning Jersey . Those players were Dallas Stars 2012 first-rounder Radek Faksa, Winnipeg Jets 2013 fourth-rounder Jan Kostalek and Phoenix Coyotes 2012 seventh-rounder Marek Langhamer.MINNEAPOLIS -- Nelson Cruz had a big homer in the fourth inning, but that was all the Seattle Mariners struggling offense could muster.Cruz tied Saturdays game against Minnesota at 2-all but the last-place Twins recovered for a 3-2 win Saturday night.Cruzs homer was estimated by MLBs Statcast as 493 feet, the second-longest home run in the majors this season behind a 504-foot strike by Miamis Giancarlo Stanton in Colorados Coors Field.Ive hit a few over there but they havent measured that far, Cruz said. You never know with Statcast, you never know how far its going to go until they say.Mariners manager Scott Servais was also impressed by Cruzs blast.Thats about as far as you can hit it in this park, Servais said. He absolutely killed it. Big hit at the time to give us a little momentum going forward, but then they quickly got it back with the Sano homer. I thought we had a chance there late, we just didnt get it done.Minnesotas Miguel Sano answered Cruz with a tiebreaking homer in the bottom of the fourth and Tyler Duffey pitched seven strong innings for his best start in more than a month to lead Minnesota. They hit a big homer there, Sano said. But I want the team win every day, and not a loss.Ariel Miranda (5-2) lost for the first time in five starts this month, lasting four innings and giving up three runs and three hits. Seattle fell 2 1/2 games behind Baltimore for the second AL wild card.Theyre all important, Servais said. Tonight was important, tomorrows important, the next ones important. Its just where we are in the season. The Mariners threatened in the ninth against Brandon Kintzler when RRobinson Cano singled and Cruz reached on an error by Sano.dddddddddddd But Kyle Seagers hard grounder was snared by Sano, who stepped on third and threw to first for a double play. Adam Lind flied out to end the game and give Kintzler his 15th save in 18 chances.Seattle has struggled offensively even while winning 11 of its previous 15 games. The Mariners have scored two runs or fewer in six of their past eight games. We certainly need to score more than two runs, Servais said. Not a sharp night all around; just not a lot going on offensively. Obviously we had some chances late and didnt get the big hit.NO UNDEFEATED MONTH FOR MIRANDAMiranda was vying to become just the 14th rookie in major league history to go 5-0 in September. Acquired from the Baltimore Orioles for Wade Miley at trade deadline, Miranda had allowed a total of six earned runs in four September starts. My secondary pitches were not very good, Miranda said through an interpreter. When I had a chance to throw my breaking ball, it was not working. So thats when I threw my fastball and got hit. The fastball was a little bit up.UP NEXTMariners RHP Taijuan Walker (6-11, 4.32 ERA) starts against Twins LHP Hector Santiago (12-9, 4.82). Walker gave up five runs in 4 1/3 innings in a loss to the Twins earlier this season. Santiago was 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA in two starts against the Mariners this season with the Los Angeles Angels. But Santiago has a 6.20 ERA in nine starts for Minnesota after being acquired in a trade. ' ' '
