RALEIGH, N.C. -- North Carolina State executed its plan against Wake Forest: get a fast start, play from in front, force the Demon Deacons out of what they do best. The only hiccup? Penalties -- a lot of them.Still, N.C. State won an Atlantic Coast Conference opener under fourth-year coach Dave Doeren for the first time, beating Wake Forest 33-16 on Saturday.Ryan Finley threw for 300 yards and three touchdowns for the Wolfpack (3-1), while Matt Dayes ran for 125 yards and a score. Dayes 6-yard TD started a run of four straight scoring drives by the Wolfpack, who led 17-0 after the first quarter and 23-3 early in the second. It was good just for us to hop on them early, said Jaylen Samuels, who had a TD catch for the Wolfpack. The offense, we did our job, we started fast. The Wolfpack finished with 527 yards against a defense ranked 12th nationally against the run and 20th in scoring defense (16.5).We talked about it all week: Wakes a team that wants to play a four-quarter game, Doeren said. We didnt feel like they were built offensively to catch up. We felt like they were built to control the ball, keep their defense off the field and grind you out.The biggest flaw? Thirteen penalties for 144 yards, both season highs.John Wolford threw for 263 yards and a touchdown for the Demon Deacons (4-1, 1-1), who got as close as 26-16 entering the final quarter but never seriously threatened to wrestle control away from the Wolfpack.Wake Forest was going for its first 5-0 start since 2006, which was also the last time it won in Raleigh as part of a surprise run to the ACC title. But the Demon Deacons did themselves no favors in the red zone. Twice they settled for field goals, while another drive that reached the Wolfpack 23 also stalled and ended with a field goal.Wolfords 9-yard throw to Tabari Hines late in the third was the only time the Demon Deacons reached the end zone.Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson called it a just awful red-zone performance. For us to beat N.C. State, Clawson said, we have to score more touchdowns. ... They stopped us when they had to. They are a good football team.THE TAKEAWAYWAKE FOREST: The Demon Deacons defense can keep them in games, but there are days when the offense has to work awfully hard for its production and struggles to dig out of holes. This game only reinforced little margin for error Wake Forest has when it falls behind early and Wolford -- or injured fellow starter Kendall Hinton -- face steady pressure.N.C. STATE: Does N.C. State have a penalty problem or was this one bad outing? The flags mounted for things unnecessary roughness and chop blocks -- the kind of things that cant happen as the Wolfpack go deeper into ACC play in pursuit of a bowl bid.HITTING WOLFORDThe Wolfpack finished with four sacks and has nine in the past two games dating to a win against Old Dominion before last weeks bye.ONE-SIDED OF LATEThis marked the third straight season that the Wolfpack beat the Demon Deacons by double-digit margins. Two years ago, N.C. State won 42-13 here. Last year, the Wolfpack scored four 50-yard touchdowns in a put-the-game-away opening quarter of a 35-17 road win.HINES BIG DAYHines, a sophomore from Florence, South Carolina, entered with eight catches for 101 yards this year. He finished career highs of nine catches for 125 yards in this one.PROTESTTwo members of N.C. States band took a knee on the field and didnt play during the national anthem.UP NEXTWAKE FOREST: The Demon Deacons stay in Atlantic Division play by hosting Syracuse, who has won four straight meetings dating to the 2011 season.N.C. STATE: N.C. State hosts Notre Dame in the second meeting between the schools, the other one coming in the Gator Bowl to end the 2002 season when Philip Rivers was the Wolfpack quarterback.---Follow Aaron Beard on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/aaronbeardap and the APs college football site at http://collegefootball.ap.orgCheap Jerseys From China . EUGENE, Ore. -- One one-hundredth of a second. After receiving a kidney transplant last September and going through a second kidney surgery in October, after going through months of recovery, training and daily medication, Aries Merritt missed making the U.S. Olympic team Saturday by just one one-hundredth of a second.Racing in the 110-meter hurdles final at the U.S. Olympics trials, Merritt thought he crossed the line in second or third place. But after an agonizing delay, his place was shown as fourth with a time of 13.22, just behind third-place finisher Jeff Porter (13.21).Merritt was obviously disappointed, but he said he had come to grips with it. After all, he has a gold medal in the event from the 2012 Olympics and is still competing against the worlds best despite once thinking he could never run again because of his failing kidneys. Not making the Olympics is far better than being hooked to a dialysis machine for the rest of your life.Nothing can be worse than being told you can never run again, even if you come up a little short here, he said. Ive been to the Olympics, I won the Olympics. Ive broken the world record. So, I mean, someone else can have a turn.Even though Merritt will not compete in Rio, he should still be an inspiration to everyone. While you watch Michael Phelps, Simone Biles and Usain Bolt this August, also keep Merritt and what he overcame prominently in mind. After winning gold in 2012, his kidneys began to fail in 2013. Even with his kidney function no higher than 15 percent, he finished third at the world championships in Beijing late last August. He then underwent a transplant just days later in Arizona, receiving a kidney from his older sister, LaToya Hubbard. And he was only one one-hundredth of a second from making the Olympics again the following summer. It hasnt even been a year since the transplant, only 10 months, Hubbard said. For him to put his heart on the line and just miss at the team, I dont look at it as a failure or coming up short. Hes still on top. Hes still an Olympic gold medalist and still the world-record holder. He may not be able to defend that title, but nobody can take away what he did.No, nobody can take that away. But what should they take away from what he has done and overcome?People should just know that no matter what youre going through in life, if you keep your mind focused on something you want to accomplish, anything is possible, Merritt said.dddddddddddd At world championships last year in Beijing, I had roughly no kidney function -- under 15 percent -- and I was still able to do amazing things. This time was a little different because I was compromised by the surgery. Me being sliced open, and my muscles shifted and putting a new organ in and me getting adjusted to the meds, its a lot to comprehend. People dont understand the severity of what Ive been through. Despite the fact Im still out here doing the best I can.Merritts kidney doctor, Les Thomas, says that not only should people look to the hurdler for inspiration -- a way to say no matter how dark it may be, there is always a brighter spot -- they should look to his sister as a hero, as well. She demonstrated extraordinary altruism, giving him a kidney.Thomas also says people should take this story as a reason to consider organ donations. Donating a kidney is not that risky -- you only need one -- but the waiting list can be many years for a transplant. They may not have anyone in their lives who can give them a kidney and they will wait and wait and wait because there is a huge demand for kidney transplants, Thomas said. And sometimes they will pass away with no kidney ever coming to them. ... If [more people donated], we would have a lot less people on the waiting list and less people would die.Hubbard, who gave birth to her daughter the previous year, said she never worried about any risk in giving up her kidney. She simply asked her brother for the phone number of the Mayo Clinic so she could schedule a time.Let me go through this process and get on a table and help my brother out, she said. He had something in his body that was dying and I have something that was living. She gave it to him. And because she did, Merritt is alive and healthy and competing. And inspiring. This is still just a beginning, Hubbard said. We still have the 2020 Olympics ahead and two world championships. I think this is eye-opening for kids and others. ...Always extend a hand and pay it forward. ' ' '
