BEREA, Ohio -- Cody Kessler relishes the underdog role. Its the only one hes known.Clevelands rookie quarterback has spent his entire football life overcoming long odds, sidestepping danger and making the best of difficult situations.Hes in a new one.Just three weeks into his first NFL season, Kessler, who was once told his career would not take him further than junior college, will make his regular-season debut Sunday when the Browns (0-2) visit the Miami Dolphins. This wasnt the plan the Browns had in mind for Kessler, but the 23-year-old has experienced enough turmoil to know not everything follows a script.Thats how life is, he said. Youre going to have adversity, youre going to have different things that you dont expect to happen, and its just how you react to them. I know it might sound clich?, but I really believe in that. With Robert Griffin III and Josh McCown sustaining injuries to their left shoulders in the first two weeks, the Browns quickly ran out of options and will now turn to Kessler, a third-round draft pick who started 41 games at USC, to run their offense and lead them.Kessler is the fifth quarterback to start Clevelands past five games and the franchises 26th since 1999.Kessler has been consumed by preparation the past two days. He buried his nose deep in Clevelands playbook, spent hours watching and re-watching the Browns first two losses and studied tape on the Dolphins.Miami roughed up Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson in Week 1 and then knocked New Englands Jimmy Garoppolo from the game a week ago when linebacker Kiko Alonso drove him to the turf.Kessler knows he has to avoid Miamis vice.Their front seven is very physical and I think a lot of that has to do with how well their back four play, Kessler said before practice Wednesday.Their safeties, their DBs, they get after the ball and they hold up really well in coverage and then their front seven get after the quarterback.Browns coach Hue Jackson, whose selection of Kessler stunned draft experts, admires the way his young QB is digging into his assignment. One thing we all know about Cody is he is in this building from morning to night, Jackson said. We have to kick him out. That is just the way he is.He sees this as a tremendous opportunity for himself and I think he wants to go represent himself and the organization and his teammates well. He is preparing as hard as he can to get himself ready to play.Kesslers path to the pros was not normal. After deciding in high school to focus on football, he didnt get any major college offers and there was a long period when it appeared his dreams would be dashed. His father, Don, a former corrections officer, drove him around to various summer camps and put together highlight videos hoping to entice a major college to take a chance on his son. There was times when people would just say, `Hey, youre not going to play college, expect to go to the junior college here in Bakersfield, he said.Kessler wouldnt let rejection discourage him.I just kept telling myself I want to be bigger, I want to be better than that and I want to continue to work, he said. And it paid off. Just worked for me, just kind of always having that no-quit mentality.Browns Pro Bowl tackle Joe Thomas has been impressed with the focus, work ethic and humility Kessler has shown. You admire a guy that kind of has a chip on his shoulder, a guy like Cody who has had to work for everything and hasnt been given anything, Thomas said. A smaller guy, not your 6-6, 250-pound quarterback, so you respect him because everything he has gotten, hes earned it.At USC, Kessler fought to win playing time and wound up throwing 88 touchdown passes while enduring numerous coaching changes and playing in one of college footballs most celebrated programs.Kessler recalled missing a potential touchdown with an incompletion on his first throw before connecting 15 times in a row.It was a cool experience, he said. But it was something that youll never forget. Like a situation like this, something that youll never forget and something you want to take advantage of.Game notes WR Terrelle Pryor would sacrifice everything for his team. Ill do anything to help us win, anything, cut my finger off, do whatever Ive got to do, he said. Im willing to die on this field.... Rookie DE Carl Nassib had surgery on his broken left hand. Jackson believes Nassib, who has been impressive so far, will be back soon. ... Ryan Garbutt had a goal and two assists as Dallas snapped a six-game losing streak with a 5-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night. ARLINGTON, Texas -- Tony Romo is injured again, and Dak Prescott is no longer the fourth-round draft pick expected to spend a couple of years soaking up NFL knowledge from the bench. The rookie quarterback from Mississippi State is starting the opener -- the first to do so for Dallas in 15 years -- and the Cowboys arent counting the days until Romo returns from a broken bone in his back. The shock of going 0-7 after the first of Romos two broken left collarbones last season and finishing 4-12 a year after winning the NFC East was enough to change their mindset. It doesnt hurt that Prescott was one of the leagues biggest surprises in the preseason. No ones naive, executive vice president of personnel Stephen Jones said. When you lose your starting quarterback for some time, and its obviously going to be some time, that certainly wasnt in our plans. But Daks emergence makes you feel better about having that happen to you. There is a lot of optimism for Dak.The biggest question for Dallas heading into Sundays opener against the New York Giants is how long Romo will be out. If the Cowboys dont put the 36-year-old on injured reserve and leave open the option for him to return, they presumably believe he can be ready faster than eight weeks into the season.Meantime, Dallas is expecting Prescott to deliver wins after he threw for five touchdowns without an interception and ran for two scores in three exhibition games. Hes the first quarterback drafted by the Cowboys since 2009 and just the second since Quincy Carter went in the second round and started right away in 2001.You look around, Prescott said. You look at the stars for the Pro Bowls on some of these lockers that I will be out there on the field with. The pressure is not on me. I have guys who can make plays and make my job easier.Prescott speaks of an offensive line featuring three first-round picks since 2011, and all three were Pro Bowlers the past two seasons (LT Tyron Smith, C Travis Frederick, RG Zack Martin).Dez Bryant, the 2014 All-Pro receiver who broke his right foot in the 2015 opener and was never the same last season, caught two touchdowns from Prescott in the preseason. Tight end Jason Witten has been to 10 Pro Bowls. And then theres fellow rookie Ezekiel Elliott, the fourth overall pick out of Ohio State. The running back faces expectations that seem to grow daily, even though he missed most of training camp and took just 14 snaps in one preseason game -- the same game in which Romo got hurt at Seattle.ddddddddddddI like where we are with the other parts of the offense, obviously the protections, the running game, all of that, owner and general manager Jerry Jones said. Some of the other things we can do that we dont have to depend on that experience are there and alive in this team.Things to consider with the Cowboys once again stuck in a .500 rut that enters its 20th season, with a 152-152 record in the regular season since the start of 1997:DEFENSIVE QUESTIONS: Three projected starters will open the season on suspensions for substance-abuse violations: DEs Randy Gregory and DeMarcus Lawrence (four games each) and LB Rolando McClain (10 games). The Cowboys finished last in the NFL in takeaways and turnover margin last year and didnt change the roster much. They need veteran LB Sean Lee to show the playmaking ability from early in his career.AMONG THE NEWCOMERS: DE Benson Mayowa and DT Cedric Thornton signed with Dallas in free agency, while the draft produced another end-tackle tandem in Maliek Collins of Nebraska (third round) and Charles Tapper from Oklahoma (fourth). All missed time in training camp with injuries but should be able to contribute early in the season.SEASONED SECONDARY: The most experienced part of the defense is the secondary with CBs Orlando Scandrick, Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne, and S Barry Church. But they need to back up that experience with big plays. Scandrick returns after missing last season with a knee injury. Carr hasnt had an interception in more than two years, and Claiborne has just three picks in four seasons since Dallas moved up eight spots to get him in the top 10 of the 2012 draft.THE LAST WORD: Tight end Jason Witten, going into his 14th season, was the creator of the same old story line from a few years ago when the Cowboys kept missing the playoffs with losses that dropped them to 8-8 on the final day of the season. And now hes without Romo again. They came into the league together in 2003. You cant flinch in these situations, he said. Doesnt mean that you dont live in the reality of where it is.---Online:AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFL---Follow Schuyler Dixon on Twitter at https://twitter.com/apschuyler ' ' '
