As our countdown to the first full week of college football turns to five days, we salute the five teams that have bounced back from September losses to win the national championship outright in the poll era.?One loss can be devastating for teams with national title hopes, but Ohio State and Alabama have proved that its better to lose early than to lose late in the College Football Playoff era. The 2014 Buckeyes and 2015 Crimson Tide are two of five teams to win the national championship outright after losing in September. Urban Meyers 2008 Florida Gators also accomplished the feat, as did?Miami in 1983 and Notre Dame in 1977.After the Gators 31-30 loss to Ole Miss on Sept. 27, 2008, Tim Tebow made the promise that no one in the nation would work harder than him and his teammates the rest of the year. The team responded by running the table and beating Oklahoma 24-14 to win the national title.Six years later, coach Urban Meyers Ohio State squad fell to Virginia Tech 35-21 on Sept. 6, 2014. The Buckeyes would also lose quarterbacks Braxton Miller and J.T. Barrett to injury, but that didnt stop third-stringer Cardale Jones from finishing off a championship run that included a 59-0 rout of No. 13 Wisconsin in the Big Ten championship game and wins over No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 Oregon in the inaugural College Football Playoff.?Last year, Alabama became the fifth team -- third since 2008 -- to lose in September and go on to win the national championship outright. The Crimson Tide fell to No. 15 Ole Miss 43-37 on Sept. 19. Many wrote off the Tide and questioned whether the Alabama dynasty was over. But Alabama would respond with a title run that included eight wins over AP Top 25 opponents, an FBS record.?The moral of the story? Dont worry if your team loses next month. In case you missed any part of our countdown:6 days: Christian McCaffreys six games with 300-plus all-purpose yards in 20157 days: UNCs Ryan Switzer has seven career punt-return touchdowns8 days: Alabamas record eight wins vs. AP Top 25 teams last season9 days: Nick Saban is 9-0 against his former assistant coaches10 days: Temples 10 sacks in win over Penn State last season11 days: Navy won a school-record 11 games last season12 days: Alabama has won 12 straight games, the longest active FBS streak.13 days: Lucky number 13 for a trio of teams last season.14 days: Boise State has played in 14 straight bowl games.15 days: Kansas has lost 15 straight games, the longest active FBS streak.16 days: Peyton Manning wore No. 16 for Tennessee.17 days: TCU QBs completed 17 of 17 passes in a game in 2012, an FBS record.18 days: Ohio State has won an FBS-best 18 consecutive road games.19 days: There are 19 head coaches at their alma mater this season.20 days: It has been 20 years since Florida won its first national championship.21 days:?Oklahoma led the nation in average scoring margin (21.5) last season.22 days: Ohio State has been in the top 10 of the AP poll for 22 straight weeks.23 days:?Virginia Tech has played in an FBS-best 23 straight bowl games.24 days:?In the first game of the historic rivalry, Navy beat Army 24-0.25 days:?Michigans Desmond Howard won the Heisman 25 years ago.26 days:?Arkansas State led the nation with 26 interceptions in 2015.27 days: Clemsons Greg Huegel led the nation with 27 field goals in 2015.28 days: Adrian Peterson wore No. 28 for Oklahoma.29 days: Alabamas Bryant-Denny Stadium opened in 1929.30 days: Miamis Vinny Testaverde won the Heisman 30 years ago. BERKELEY, Calif. -- Growing up in Texas, Davis Webb knew all about the Big Game rivalry between California and Stanford. Now as he finishes up his only season as starting quarterback at Cal, Webb gets to experience it first hand when the Golden Bears (4-6, 2-5 Pac-12) host the Cardinal (7-3, 5-3) on Saturday.I dont think theres anything like this game, he said. Theres so much tradition, so much pageantry and so many great players that have played in this game. Im just excited to be a part of it. From afar, living in Dallas, everybody knew what the Big Game was. Its going to be one of the greatest experiences Ive ever had in my life. While the Big Game is new to Webb, it has been part of Stanford coach David Shaws life for decades.Shaw remembers watching his first as a high school senior in 1989 when his father, Willie, was an assistant at Stanford and immediately noticed the heightened noise, energy and excitement in the stadium. That only increased the following year when Shaw was a player at Stanford and the Cardinal rallied for a 27-25 win after scoring a touchdown with 12 seconds left, missing a 2-point conversion, recovering an onside kick and capitalizing on two personal fouls to set up John Hopkins game-winning field goal.I say this every year, to the freshmen from all over the country and maybe the sophomores who didnt play last year, to not be surprised by the emotion as you walk through the stadium. Youre going to feel it, Shaw said. I feel it as a coach. Im an alum. Im a Stanford guy. And Big Game is always Big.Here are some other things to watch:BIG GAME STREAK: The rivalry has been extremely one-sided of late with Stanford winning the past six meetings -- one shy of the longest streak in series history held by the Cardinal from 1995-2001. Only one of those games was decided by fewer than 10 points annd the average margin of victory has been 23.dddddddddddd.2 points per game.Thatd be a pretty cool legacy to leave, to be a part of a team that was able to beat Stanford, Webb said.BOWL BID: After opening the season 4-3, Cal has lost three straight games to put the Bears hopes of returning to a bowl game in serious jeopardy. The Bears must win their final two games against Stanford and UCLA to become bowl eligible, although they could have an outside shot of making a bowl with five wins if there are not enough six-win teams to fill up all the slots. We know whats at stake, Cal receiver Bug Rivera said. Everybody knows whats at stake. Wed really like to get that bowl opportunity and think were going to get it done.CHRYSTS PROGRESS: After going just 24 for 47 for 164 yards in his first two starts, Stanford quarterback Keller Chryst showed signs of improvement last week at Oregon. He completed 19 of 26 passes for 258 yards and three touchdowns.Hes been making incremental improvements the first two games, Shaw said. Its the execution of the offense. All the positive signs were there in practice. No one wants it more and no one is pushing himself harder than Keller. All he has to do is play his part. He doesnt have to take the game over.STOPPING McCAFFREY: After being slowed by an undisclosed injury last month, Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey has been back to his dynamic self the past three weeks. He has rushed for 503 yards at an average of 7.0 yards per carry and scored seven TDs in that span. He faces a Cal run defense that is second-worst in the FBS, allowing 283.4 yards rushing per game.---More AP college football: www.collegefootball.ap.org and https://twitter.com/AP-Top25 ' ' '
