RIO DE JANEIRO -- Theres fate, theres luck and then theres Danell Leyva, who wrapped it all up with two silver medals in less than 90 minutes Tuesday.Three months ago, there was serious question of whether the 24-year-old all-around bronze medalist in the 2012 Games could compete at all after he sustained a serious injury to his calf while breaking up a dog fight. One month ago, he was the alternate to the Olympic team, destined to watch the Rio Games from the stands. When Leyva was named to the U.S. team after John Orozco tore his ACL in training just three weeks before opening ceremonies, Leyvas stepfather and coach Yin Alvarez said he couldnt breathe he was so stunned. And when Leyvas hands slipped from the high bar in the Americans final routine of the Olympic team finals, the last error on a day in which the U.S. committed several to finish in fifth place, not many would have predicted he would have won the silver medal on high bar eight days later.Leyva won silver on the parallel bars Tuesday as well to raise the total medal count for the U.S. mens team to three (Alex Naddour took the bronze on pommel horse Sunday). Sam Mikulak finished fourth on high bar, just a tenth of a point below Leyva. But Leyva was the only one who didnt seem particularly surprised at the sequence of events. Asked how he would have reacted if someone had told him three months ago that hed end up winning two Olympic medals, he laughed.I probably would have argued with you and said, No, Im going to win gold, Leyva said. Thats the mentality you have to tell yourself. You have to believe within yourself that you can do more than people expect.Alvarez said he had just landed in Miami from a trip to junior nationals in Michigan in early May with his younger gymnasts, when he learned of the dog bite, which left a gaping divot in Leyvas calf and wounds on his fingers from where he tried to pry the dogs mouth open. When I got home, Danny has feet this big, Alvarez said, holding his hands about a foot apart. And he cant even walk. So to me, I thought the Olympics was over. So when he was named alternate to the team, I cant breathe because I think we wouldnt even come here to see the Olympics. I think its over. Four years of hard work is over. So when he got the chance to be alternate, I feel so proud. Oh my God, youre still alive.[But] he never gave up. He never told me he was not going to compete. ... He made the team and I said Were going to bring home more than one medal. Leyva called the high bar turnaround absolutely a redemption. Its incredible, honestly. Its a dream come true, he said. Nobody has a perfect day, but I feel like this was as close to perfect as I possibly could have gotten, and Im incredibly happy.Leyvas two medals are part of a 12-medal haul for the U.S. gymnastics program, the highest ever for the Americans.[Everything that happened] has absolutely given me a greater appreciation [for the medals], but I never thought it wasnt going to be possible, Leyva said. When I had the dog on my leg I was just thinking, Really, right now? This has to happen right now? But then as soon as I got back from the hospital I was like, Ill be back faster than people expect and thats exactly what the doctor said. He said hes never seen anybody heal that quickly.Miracles happen, you know? Cheap Shoes For Sale . The AFL Players Association is open to negotiating the work-life balance of footballers but wont budge on mandated days off.The delicate relationship between a players club responsibilities and life outside football looms as a sleeper issue in ongoing pay negotiations between the league and players.Sydney veteran Ted Richards revealed this week players were eager to secure a second mid-season bye, and Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley put the issue of player schedules on the agenda this week. The Brownlow medalist is frustrated at restrictions that dont allow him to provide a fully immersive training and welfare program at his club.Buckley raised the matter at the annual coaches dinner, hosted by AFL supremo Gillon McLachlan on Tuesday night, and outlined his case publicly on Thursday. The main (issue) for me is clubs being able to control their own program ... we only get access to the guys for three-and-a-half days a week, he said. Were here to win games of footy, produce a really goood program and develop great competitors that are good people as well.ddddddddddddIts something well keep putting our hands up for and being trusted more from the (AFL) PA and the AFL.In response, AFLPA player relations boss Brett Murphy said he had empathy for Buckleys point of view, but drew a line under their day and a half off.We are always open to providing clubs with flexibility around scheduling where there is a need, he said. However, we also need to ensure that players have sufficient time away from their clubs to develop as people and provide balance to their lives. For that reason, players are entitled to a day and a half off each week.We think this is fair and reasonable, and strikes the right balance in ensuring players are adequately prepared to play.Negotiations continue between the AFL and AFLPA over the new collective bargaining agreement.
