NEW YORK -- Some Columbia University wrestlers will be suspended from the team for as long as the rest of the school year over lewd and racially insensitive text messages, but some teammates can keep competing, including in a state championship this weekend, the university announced on Friday.Columbia wouldnt say how many wrestlers are barred from competing, citing educational privacy laws, and the team coach and assistant coaches didnt immediately respond to emails and phone calls seeking comment. The team apologized in a letter on Thursday, calling the text messages inexcusable and saying members were prepared for repercussions. We could not be more remorseful for the harm that this situation has caused, the team wrote, according to a student-run blog that said it received the letter. The blog, Bwog.com, had published screengrabs of the crude text messages. The Ivy League university had put all competition on hold Monday to investigate the texts, which the blog said were exchanged by seniors on the wrestling team. Some messages disparaged female students, expressed hope that someone would be sexually assaulted at a campus event, used anti-gay terms and slurred black people, including while discussing the deadly police shooting of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, in 2014.The blog redacted the senders identities, so it was unclear how many people sent or responded to them. But Columbias athletics department said in a statement on Friday it determined only a distinct group of wrestlers was involved. Those responsible for the offensive statements are suspended from the team through the rest of the school year, some others are barred just through the rest of the semester and those who werent involved can continue competing, the athletics department said. No wrestlers are suspended from their studies, just from the sport. The department said it recognized students have a right to express themselves, but the appalling messages dont fit behavior standards for Columbias student-athletes. The athletes code of conduct includes pledges to treat everyone with dignity and respect and not to do anything that might reflect poorly on themselves or the team. The wrestlers will work with an advocate for fighting discrimination in sports, the department said. The messages were revealed a week after Harvard University canceled the remainder of the season for its mens soccer team because of lewd comments about members of the womens soccer team. For example, how should Nathan Lyon expect to go against Pakistan at the Gabba this week? Badly, if you look at his Test record against Pakistan: three wickets at 140.66. Brilliantly, if you consider his Test record at the Gabba: 24 wickets at 23.95. It is the latter that gives Lyon confidence after he struggled against Pakistan in the UAE in 2014.They play spin well but hopefully I can generate a bit more bounce than I did in the UAE, Lyon said in Brisbane on Monday. Hopefully there will be a little bit more pace in the wicket as well so if there are any nicks they will carry and I will be able to hit the splice of the bats with a few bat-pads and a few caught I hope.Lyon is far from the only spinner who has enjoyed working at the Gabba: at no venue did Shane Warne take more Test wickets than the 68 he accumulated in Brisbane. And yet, every year Lyon is bemused - and amused - by the medias preoccupation with pace at the Gabba. Will Australia play four fast men? Lyon hasnt missed a Gabba Test, and hes not about to now.Ill tell you one thing, this is my sixth [Gabba] Test and every year you guys seem to write that, Lyon said. So Ill leave you guys to write that, that theres going to be four quicks and stuff. Im confident of playing, Ill put it that way.The Gabbba pitches prepared by curator Kevin Mitchell Jr typically offer some movement off the surface and plenty of bounce - Lyon especially enjoys running his fingers up the back of the ball to get the ball to kick off the pitch.dddddddddddd And he will do so this year with a certain monkey off his back, having picked up four wickets in the Adelaide Test against South Africa.Lyon may have more than 200 Test wickets but still was likely to be axed for the Adelaide Test had Steve OKeefe not suffered a calf niggle that rendered him unavailable for selection. When Lyon finally took his first wicket in the Adelaide Test, it ended a drought of 660 first-class deliveries without a wicket, stretching across Test and Sheffield Shield play.I felt like I was bowling well, Lyon said. There were a couple of chances that went down here and there but Im never going to sit here and blame anyone for missing a chance. We train hard enough and thats just the way cricket goes.I was actually happy with the way I was bowling and to be able to come out in Adelaide and contribute to a Test match win, thats my biggest thing. My biggest thing is bowling well in partnerships and going out there and taking 20 wickets as a bowling group. ' ' '
